Welcome to Prime Berth Fishing Heritage Centre, located in Main Tickle, Twillingate. This unique , interactive, interpretative centre was created by myself, David Boyd as a tribute to the culture and heritage of my proud fishing forefathers. Here, you’ll get a first-hand glimpse at fishing life and what it takes to be a fisherman in a facility unlike any other in the province.
Growing up in the fishing boats, I was destined to be a fisherman, but listening to Father's stories of how fishing was only poverty, I entered the teaching profession and taught locally for a number of years before going back to my roots and entering the fishery full time in 1995. With the fishery being just a shadow of its former self in terms of time spent on the water, summer days give me plenty of time for Cod splitting demonstrations, guided tours of Prime Berth, as well as providing tourists with the unique opportunity of accompanying me when fishing for lobster, Cod or mackeral. Prime Berth encompasses a craft store, a look-out tower with views of the Atlantic Ocean, a walk-in cod trap, and the only Sei whale skeleton in Canada...fully restored by myself.
I chose the name "Prime Berth" for my heritage centre, as each spring all the fishermen in our village would gather in our kitchen where Father would hold the annual 'Cod-Trap Draw." Each fisherman would reach into the brown paper bag and draw out what he hoped would be the best, or "Prime Berth" in the community.,
Prime Berth Heritage Centre is the first place you’ll see as you cross the causeway to Twllinigate, and the last place you’ll forget!
