Bibles for missions is a thrift store where a large percentage of the profits go to sending bibles overseas
A Bibles for Missions Thrift Store opened its doors in Fredericton, N.B in mid-October 2010, and is the first of its kind in the Maritime Provinces.
The seed for having a store in Fredericton was planted by Peter and Ann Wolters. The couple spends many vacations visiting family in Ontario through to British Columbia. A highlight of their trip is shopping in the various Bibles for Missions Thrift Stores scattered along the way. They believed a BfM store would do well in Fredericton, so for them this store is a dream come true.
In late fall of 2008, a Steering Committee was formed and in December 2009, a Board of Directors was established with five members. The Board worked closely with the Steering Committee which was officially dissolved just prior to the store opening. The Board currently has nine members who bring an array of expertise to the table.
The seed that was planted to open a BfM store grew significantly when a building was purchased in May 2010 at 387 Sunset Drive. Major renovations were required to bring the building up to code which resulted in many challenges. Lawrence Cameron, a dedicated volunteer and Board member took on the role of General Contractor, and worked hard and diligently with contractors and volunteers to ensure that the store was ready for the proposed October opening date.
Volunteer recruitment has been a slow and steady process and many more are welcomed, but word is getting around that the Fredericton BfM store is an enjoyable place to volunteer. It’s not uncommon to hear out in the community that the ladies and gentlemen are so friendly. Gina Boneschansker has taken on the role of store manager. All the volunteers are to be commended for the effort and time devoted in operating the store to the best of their ability. They love to plan special events such as the “Tea Cup” sale, and strive to come up with unique ideas to increase sales, and to bring new customers to the store.
Hendrica Drost is the Volunteer Coordinator. Four hours per week is ideal for scheduling. For additional information, she can be reached at 450-3959.
The BfM Thrift Store in Fredericton has blossomed into a clean, friendly and inviting place to shop. Customers are thrilled to see the array of merchandise at bargain prices, and take delight in the knowledge that their purchases are assisting the Bible League of Canada in their various endeavours to spread the gospel around the world. After only one year in operation, the Fredericton BfM store sent a cheque for $30,000. What an accomplishment!
For those who are contemplating opening a Bibles for Missions thrift store, plant the seed and watch it grow. The scripture verse from Proverbs 16:3 speaks volumes: Depend on God in all that you do and your plans will succeed.
About Bibles For Missions
The BFM family is made up of several different groups, but all groups work together and have a common focus. BFM is a volunteer-driven, non-denominational Christian organization that operates thrift stores across Canada. There are several different focuses in the BFM mission, all of which are equally important.
At BFM, volunteers play a crucial role in the success of our organization. Thrift Store volunteers are made up of all ages and denominations, and their contributions vary anywhere from a couple hours a week to full-time participation. We aim to create a place where volunteers feel in community with one another and a place where people enjoy coming to help us in our mission. We also hope that our volunteers serve the local people with dignity and respect. Another focus is being good stewards of the earth God has given us. It is imperative that all our stores are environmentally conscious, and follow what is outlined in our “Green for the Gospel” platform (see Going Green to Spread the Gospel).
Another focus is generating funds for Bible League Canada. Our hope is that the BFM family, and the Joint Ministry between BFM Foundation (Canada) and Bible League Canada, will continue to aid in the distribution of Scripture into countries around the world. We believe the Bible to be the infallible Word of the Triune God; therefore, BFM aids in worldwide Bible placement. The hope is that in all aspects of our organization, Christ’s love will be exemplified.
