At Thickwood Hills Produce, our business is primarily the cultivation, production and sale of oyster mushrooms. We also offer seasonal produce as well as photographic and folk art items.
Upon visiting Salt Spring Island, off Canada’s west coast, I witnessed a community that strives to be supportive of local business and farmers. I met several people who support themselves through a home based and or farm based business. The concept appeals to me and it spurred me to think about creating my own business.
Our oyster mushrooms are grown indoors, year round in a climate controlled facility. Oyster mushrooms are grown without the need for compost and very restrictive conditions that are required by other types of mushrooms. They can be grown on clean cereal straw which is an abundant commodity in my region.
Growing up on a farm with a large garden made it easy to just add a few extra rows to my own garden and if someone happens to want to purchase some, well easy peasy.
Fresh, local products are not only supportive of small businesses (who doesn’t want their friends and neighbours to succeed?), you can taste the difference!
