The Motley Kitchen is a lunch bistro, an event space, caterer and kitchen incubator.
Downtown Sudbury is becoming the target of many housing developments, urban art projects, small business start-ups, infrastructure investments and other rejuvenating changes. The Motley Kitchen is a new community economic development initiative, to be established as a creative space for the city's food industry entrepreneurs.
The Motley Kitchen has three main components:
1. Incubator kitchen:
An incubator kitchen is where small food businesses can rent space on a per-hour or per-weekly basis. Starting a food business is expensive. The price of buying equipment and renting a space can cost upwards of $50,000, which can stifle the spark of many entrepreneurs. Not only that, but Ontario health and safety code requires all food products be made in a commercial kitchen if they're to be sold for consumption.
That's where we come in! We cover the overhead costs: the equipment, the space, hydro, gas, certifications, and health unit inspections, so our tenants can focus on making their ideas a reality. Incubators are also about providing new entrepreneurs business and marketing mentorship, which will be another focus of The Motley Kitchen.
We’ve already been contacted by more than 15 Sudburians who would like to rent space in the incubator kitchen.
2. Bistro:
Every weekday, The Motley Kitchen will open as a bistro, serving delicious soups, sandwiches, and more to the hordes of Sudbury lunchtime goers. Our food is fresh and creative - comfort food with a twist. Natalie Lefevbre, the mastermind behind last summer's bright purple Dee-lish! food truck meals, is heading up the bistro. You know what that means? Mouth-watering burgers and ooey-gooey risotto balls will be finding a home on the menu.
3. Event space:
The Motley Kitchen dining room will be available for rent by the community. Whether you're organizing a staff Christmas party, hosting a series of cooking lessons, or planning a film screening, The Motley Kitchen will be a creative and affordable rental space, and of course, catering can be done on site.
