Responding to the underlying issues of crime and supporting people at risk of becoming criminalized.
The John Howard Society of the Central and South Okanagan (JHSCSO) has a long history of service provision in Kelowna and Penticton that dates back to 1957. As one of the few social service organizations operating in the community for more than 60 years, JHSCSO has a strong community presence and well-established professional working relationships with the criminal justice system, governmental organizations/services, and the not-for-profit sector. The Society works cooperatively and collaboratively with community resources and has been a member organization of the United Way for more than thirty years.
Individuals come into contact with the criminal justice system for a host of reasons. Chief among these reasons is the presence of complex health and social issues such as poverty, homelessness, substance misuse, developmental disability, and mental illness, as well as other co-occurring disorders. To address the multifaceted needs of those we serve, JHSCSO relies on the assistance of the many specialized resources in our community. From agencies providing mental health and addiction services to those offering legal support and advocacy, to even services for seniors, JHSCSO spans the boundaries, working in partnership with a broad range of organizations and groups in order to support and provide service. We in turn, offer to the community our unique and specialized services and programming that can only be provided by an organization that by necessity, is required to cross over multiple systems and services.
