When Laura’s friend took hundreds of photos at her daughter’s birth almost seven years ago, Laura had no idea how important those photos would be. The kids reach for them on days when they wish to feel extra special, when questions arise about the birth, when a baby is about to be born. Of course, Laura enjoys a good dose of nostalgia now and then too; she ended up cherishing the photos as one of most important events of her life and the marker of stepping professionally into the wholly rewarding work of photography and birth support (after motherhood.)

Since then, Laura Elie has been working as a doula photographer in the Okanagan valley. She fell in love with the Kelowna birth community when she had her first child: her experience of birth felt like a major step in her life long passion of creative women’s expression. She decided to draw upon her yoga and belly dance practice, and combine it with doula training and photography work to support one of the most creative times of life. From there, her photography and doula business grew in scope according to the demand. Laura believes in the power of the human body to create everyday marvels, alongside the integrity of informed choice in every action. She feels privileged to offer photography services as a way to hold up a mirror to the incredible beauty, support and empowerment she sees unfolding in every birth.
