Iqaluit Masjid is the first Islamic Centre in Iqaluit. It is also the first Mosque in the entire territory of Nunavut, Canada.
Iqaluit is a far-flung town near the Arctic Circle, inhabited by about 8,000 people, mostly aboriginal natives (Inuit). The town serves as the territorial capital and the largest community of Nunavut.
In Iqaluit there are approximately 100 Muslims. By the grace of Allah, some local Inuit have recently embraced and many are inclined towards Islam.
Consequently, in 2009 Islamic Society of Nunavut (ISN) was incorporated with the objective of establishing prayers and maintenance of the religious identity.
Construction of the masjid started in June 2015 and has since then been completed. However, more funds are needed for final inspection charges, as well as masjid upkeep and to fund other masjid activities in Iqaluit, which includes da'wah work at BBS Baffin Correctional Center and a planned food bank program.
