Dan is the MLA for Peace River North in British Columbia's 41st Parliament.
My name is Dan Davies, life long resident of Northeastern British Columbia, being born and raised in Fort St. John. I have been a Fort St. John City Councillor since 2005 and have enjoyed every minute of it. In 2011 I wanted to take my passion for politics to a different level and participated in the Prince George-Peace River federal Conservative Nomination race following the Honourable Jay Hill’s retirement. After nearly an 8 month campaign, and six rounds of voting on a preferential ballot I came in second out of 6 candidates behind our current MP, Bob Zimmer. This process taught me a lot about our region and the important role that each community plays.
Being born and raised in the North, I truly love and believe in our region and know that I can make a difference. I love what I do for our citizens and I have a deep passion for the care and well-being of the residents of Peace River North and the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. We will be facing some very challenging times over the next while where strong leadership will be needed. Some issues that must be advocated for, with a strong voice are LNG, raw log exports, while not losing site of our agriculture, tourism and forestry. Other issues that are important to the Northeast are healthcare, public education, hiring local workers and transportation. My proven leadership on council and as a Major in the Canadian Forces Reserves (CIC) will be an asset to advocate. I want our region to be a great place for my two children to grow up in, play in, work in and to raise their own families in!
My family has been in Northeastern British Columbia since 1946 following the end of the Second World War when my Grandparents moved to Fort St. John. My Grandfather was hired as a math teacher at North Peace Secondary School and retired as the Vice-Principal in the mid-seventies. I learned a lot from my Grandfather, especially his ability to lead by example and to respect and treat others as you wish to be treated. My Grandfather was a true diplomat and a very proud member of this region. These are the roots and values that formed the base of who I am.
I graduated from North Peace Secondary School in 1990 and went to work in the oil patch as a pipe liner and facilities worker. From the oil patch I went to Calgary and sold real estate. After hard times and a slow economy in Calgary I moved back to the region and got my class one drivers license and went to work hauling equipment in the gas industry, building roads and leases and finally hauling concrete for Inland Concrete . In 1995 I became very active in the cadet programme and shortly thereafter joined the Canadian Forces Reserves in the Cadet Instructor Cadre. I became the Commanding Officer of the cadet corps in both Fort Nelson and Fort St. John.
After an enjoyable number of years driving for Inland Concrete, I decided it was time to follow my dream of becoming an educator, like my grandfather before me. I live and work in Fort St. John and am married to Erin. We have a daughter, Hana, and a son Noel. I am a recipient of the Canadian Forces Decoration for distinguished service and the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal for work in our community and region.
