What does the Barrhead Public Library building contain? We have air-conditioning, free public wi-fi, over 60,000 titles in our collection of books, DVDs and CDs, and friendly staff to assist all our patrons needs.
The Mission of the Library
Our missions are simple; Education, Learning, Reading, Fun, and Community Camaraderie! The ever growing town of Barrhead is only rivaled to the ever growing Library. With new technologies such as the Yellowhead Regional Library Network or e-Resources for digital books, magazines, and texts from all over the world, we give our patrons access to an endless knowledge base. So what do we do with all this information?
We offer many programs for young and old. 'Spark' is a summer art program for young teens and adolescence which teaches various forms of artistic expression. These can be applied tor a variety of tasks from displaying an every growing personality to "helping" mom or dad paint the living room! We also offer reading clubs for teens and adults which create games around finding information in weekly offered books. These an many more can be explored by visiting the Barrhead Public Library or by viewing our website. But for the best fun it is advise to stop by and check us out!!
The History of the Library
The Barrhead Library started as a community library in December of 1950 with a $200 donation from the estate of homesteader Jack McKerracher and additional government grants. Over the years the library has been moved to various locations, always within the school grounds. It has been housed in the corner of a school, in a one room and then a two room school and in the county office on the school grounds. It was then moved into the larger, specially designed setting where it is today. In 2010, the Library celebrated 60 years of service to the Barrhead area community. Our library serves both the Town and County of Barrhead, as well as the school, and is unique in that it has always operated as a combined school and public facility.
A more detailed history of the Barrhead Public Library can be found in our 50th anniversary book ‘One of a Kind: the Story of the Barrhead Public and School Library.’ This title is available in our library collection.
