Mama’omas means “Circle of Marine Life.” The core business of Mama’omas is to manage fishing licenses that the ‘Namgis First Nation has been given access to by DFO through 2 different programs (PICFI and ATP). Mama’omas has the following goals: to enable Mama’omas to cover its costs each year and to operate without subsidies from the Nation; to allocate licenses and quota in a way that helps ‘Namgis fishers enter new fisheries and earn enough to make a living income and to stay in the fishery; to provide opportunities for ‘Namgis fishers to increase their boat utilization, incomes, and fishing skills; to encourage entrepreneurship, financial planning, and independence amongst fishers, while encouraging them to work together, when needed, to add value along the product chain; and, to support sustainable management of fish and marine resources.
